The Ohio Department of Aging solicited stories about the Great Depression from Ohioans who lived through it. More than 300 individuals sent in their stories. These stories are a fascinating documentation of a way of life that most of us, thankfully, will never fully comprehend. A must read if you are interested in history, learning extreme ways to save money, or just want a little insight into how our ancestors lived.
Below are links to the 4 volumes of stories.
* Volume 1
* Volume 2
* Volume 3
* Volume 4
Each volume contains excerpts from participants in which they discuss topics such as food, education, resourcefulness, money, entertainment, family, values, and more.
What aspect of the Great Depression do you find most interesting. Do you think we will ever see our economy return to a similar state within our lifetime?

My Oma often tells us stories from the Great Depression in Germany - and it blows my mind! They spent long periods of time eating nothing but potatoes and cabbage - eating meat was prohibited! Everything was rationed. She tells me stories of making "blood pudding" with the blood of the animals (when they were allowed to eat meat) - because they wanted to use every part of the animal. It's in sane how easy we've got it these days...
I've heard also stories during Great Depression here in our country from my great grandmother before she died. Their situation was really tough and they have to live in caves or build homes underground. We should be thankful we were not on those times.
My mom and dad lived through this stuff and it still colors their thinking and outlook. My mom has a stash of canned goods in her closet and clips coupons for everything.
