No, I will NOT go shopping on Thanksgiving!

Many Stores Are Now Opening Their Doors On Thanksgiving

I am not a huge fan of shopping, nor am I a big morning person.  Therefore, I have always been safe from the lure of Black Friday shopping.  Especially since all the best deals always sold out before the sun even came up and I would much rather be sleeping!

But retailers are now trying to reach the night owl demographic (and get a jump on their competition) by doing what was once considered the unthinkable - opening their stores on Thanksgiving night!

Yes, big box retailers such as Best Buy, Old Navy, Target, Macy's, and Kohl's have announced that they will be opening just after midnight on Thanksgiving night in many markets.  Wal-Mart is opening even earlier... at 10pm Thanksgiving night!

I can assure you that I will not be shopping at any of those stores on Thanksgiving.  On the contrary, I intend to use Thanksgiving to enjoy time with my family.

Protest Retailers Opening On Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year, and therefore I find it irksome that some retailers would try to ruin that day by turning it into an extension of Black Friday.  Employees should be given the day to spend with their families, not cater to the selfish needs of folks who want to get a deal on some random item.

Retailers are greedy.  Money is their driving force, at the expense of their employees.

If you are as outraged as I am about this new trend, protest it.  How?  Don't go shopping Thanksgiving night, no matter how great of a deal that the retailers promote.  No "great Black Friday deal" is worth giving up our national holidays.  Trust me, it is a slippery slope....

The Slippery Slope - It all starts with Thanksgiving....

Think Thanksgiving shopping only impacts retail clerks?  Think again.  Each of those retailers has a Home Office with employees who work behind the scenes.  Guess what?  When the stores are open on a holiday, there are also business people working behind the scenes at their Home Office's.  A higher than normal volume of credit card transactions on Thanksgiving night require banks/credit cards to up their customer support staffing.  More people on the roads and out shopping means that local police forces have to step-up their patrols.  Etc., etc., etc.

It is truly a slippery slope that effects more people than you may realize.  If this trend takes off stores will open earlier and earlier each year on Thanksgiving until the holiday is simply treated as another day when the majority of the country works to support our country's shopping addiction.   Think Christmas would still be sacred?  Think again!  If Thanksgiving is allowed to fall at the hands of retailers, none of our holidays are safe.

Don't let it happen!  Don't shop on Thanksgiving!

I suppose... but to be frank, you'll simply miss out on the savings, but of course, this is your choice. Nevertheless, I don't think you're going to curb materialism and consumerism... the dollar drives (just like it did Sunday shopping in so many places).

I will NOT be shopping on Black Friday. Honestly, all of the savings are quickly erased if you buy things you didn't intend to. These impulse purchases make Black Friday shopping just as expensive as other days. I will head out on the day after Christmas to find items on clearance to be used next year as gifts or decorations.

Don't worry, I have no intention of shopping on Thanksgiving and probably won't hit the Black Friday sales either!

I will not go shopping on Thanksgiving!!!! I couldn't agree with you more...let the employees spend time with their families. Can we have a few days a year where corporate America is not worried about making money?

This will be my first year not going Black Friday shopping and I am very happy about it.I always wondered about the employees having to open stores at 4 am to huge mobs of people hungry for "savings"

I don't mind shopping but I refuse to do it in person on Black Friday or Thanksgiving Night. I also agree with the slippery slope-too much in the name of getting a head start on savings. Most of the people shopping are robbing peter to pay paul or floating a bill.
